Science Adoption (Submitted by David Pummill, Chief Science Curriculum Facilitator 530-741-6112)
The Science Adoption Committee for K-12 has been working diligently for several weeks now on the selection of new instructional materials. There are about 30 teachers representing elementary, intermediate and high school on the committee. Many publishers for K-6, 6-8, and 9-12 science programs have made presentations. The k-6 teachers will meet again on February 13 for more comprehensive presentations from the publishers being considered.
The process of examining materials has been enhanced by teachers coordinating a schedule for taking each publishers program into the classroom and teaching at least one lesson on some content standard from each publisher. Our colleagues have spent countless hours examining materials, preparing lessons for the classroom, and writing critiques of the materials. In addition, each day out of the classroom for the Adoption Committee meetings requires preparation of lesson plans for substitute teachers.
On February 28 the entire committee will meet to deliberate final recommendations to forward to the MUTA/MJUSD Curriculum Committee. The Curriculum Committee will prepare the recommendations for approval by the MJUSD Board of Trustees. The adoption process has been expedited this year so that classroom teachers have editions and other materials in hand by the end of May, 2007. Many teachers have expressed a desire to be familiar with the adopted program/s before the Fall term begins. Now, that’s a move toward better teaching and learning!
MUTA extends a big “Thank You !” to those who have been willing to serve on the Committee. These folks put the “Unified” in MUTA and MJUSD.
